Complete Itinerary
A Journey to the Painted Peaks
Trailhead: 4,200m (13,779 ft) | Summit: 5,200m (17,060 ft)
Dawn Departure & The Trailhead
Your adventure begins early. We will pick you up directly from your Cusco hotel between 5:00 and 5:30 AM. From the city (3,300m / 10,826 ft), we embark on a scenic 2½ hour drive deep into the Andes.
Upon arriving at the trailhead in Phulawasipata (4,200m / 13,779 ft), we will enjoy a hearty breakfast to fuel up for the trek. The early morning mountain air is incredibly crisp and cold, so proper layering with a warm jacket, hat, and gloves is essential as we prepare to start our hike.
The Ascent to Vinicunca
The trail ahead is broad and forgiving, perfect for acclimatizing as we ascend. The hike takes approximately 2 hours, though we adapt to your pace—faster hikers can reach the top in 1½ hours, while a more relaxed pace may take 2¾ hours.
Along the way, your guide will share fascinating insights about the unique geography and the local Andean communities. Keep your camera ready, as you are very likely to encounter herds of alpacas and llamas grazing freely in their natural, high-altitude habitat.
The Summit & Ausangate Glacier
Arriving at the summit of Rainbow Mountain (5,200m / 17,060 ft) is a moment you will never forget. You will have a full hour to catch your breath and immerse yourself in the otherworldly landscape.
Your guide will explain the fascinating geology behind the vibrant mineral stripes that give the mountain its name. As you look across the valley, you will be treated to sweeping, unobstructed views of the mighty Ausangate—the highest glacial peak in the Cusco region, towering at 6,384m (20,944 ft).
The Exclusive Red Valley & Lunch
We elevate your experience by taking the path less traveled. Instead of returning the way we came, we hike towards a stunning lookout point and descend through the spectacular Red Valley. Many of our guests consider this vibrant, crimson landscape the true icing on the cake.
After a 2½ hour downhill hike, we reach the end of the trail where a well-deserved reward awaits: a lunch. Satisfied and rested, we begin the 2½ hour drive back, dropping you off at your hotel in Cusco around 5:30 – 6:00 PM.
