A Journey to the Glacial Lake
Trailhead: 3,800m (12,460 ft) | Lagoon: 4,200m (13,780 ft)
The Scenic Drive & Soraypampa
Your full-day adventure begins bright and early with a 5:00 AM pick-up from your hotel in Cusco. Settle into our comfortable transport as we embark on a captivating 3-hour drive toward the mountains.
The route itself is an experience, offering amazing views of the Andean landscape as we pass through quaint indigenous villages and sprawling cornfields. We will arrive at the trailhead in Soraypampa, situated at an elevation of 3,800 meters (12,460 feet), where we will enjoy a nourishing breakfast to prepare for the ascent.
Ascending the Salkantay Trail
With energy high, we begin our 2-hour uphill hike along the famous Salkantay trail. The path is well-trodden but challenging due to the altitude, offering a rewarding physical and visual experience.
Throughout the climb, your knowledgeable guide will point out the various high-altitude flora and fauna unique to this ecosystem. We will take brief, well-timed breaks, allowing you to catch your breath and capture postcard-perfect shots of the stunning snow-capped peaks that surround the valley.
The Turquoise Treasure
After conquering the final incline, the landscape suddenly opens up to reveal the treasure of the trek: the magnificent Humantay Blue Lagoon. Sitting at 4,200 meters (13,780 feet), the sight is simply breathtaking.
You will have ample time to rest, explore the shoreline, and marvel at the incredible, unforgettable shade of deep turquoise water. The sheer, snow-capped Humantay glacier rises dramatically in the immediate background, providing one of the most dramatic and photogenic backdrops in all of Peru.
Descent, Feast & Return
After soaking in the alpine magic, we begin our descent back to Soraypampa. The hike down is generally much quicker and easier on the lungs than the initial climb.
Once back at the base camp, a well-deserved, freshly prepared lunch awaits to replenish your energy. With our hearts and bellies full, we will board our private van for the scenic 3-hour return journey, dropping you off at your hotel in Cusco in the late afternoon.
