Arequipa is renowned for its stunning colonial architecture crafted from white volcanic stone (sillar). Its historic center is very walkable and exceptionally safe compared to other major cities. Don't miss the Santa Catalina Monastery and the bustling San Camilo Market. Arequipa is also Peru's undisputed culinary capital alongside Lima—be sure to try local dishes like Rocoto Relleno and Chupe de Camarones in a traditional picantería.
Arequipa enjoys over 300 days of sunshine a year! However, if you are planning to visit the Colca Canyon, the best time is during the dry season, from May to November. During these months, the skies over the canyon are crystal clear, making it the perfect time to witness the majestic flight of the Andean condor. The rainy season (January to March) brings lush greenery, but some trekking paths can be muddy.
Sitting at a comfortable 2,335 meters (7,660 ft), Arequipa is the perfect first stop in Peru. Spending a couple of days here allows your body to gently acclimatize before ascending to higher altitudes. From here, you can safely journey up to the Colca Canyon (where towns like Yanque and Chivay sit around 3,600m), making it the ideal stepping stone before continuing onward to Puno or Cusco.
To enter the Colca Canyon, all foreign visitors must purchase the Boleto Turístico del Colca (BTC). While you can buy this independently, booking a guided tour removes all the hassle. Our premium tours to the canyon and city handle all necessary entry fees, transport logistics, and English-speaking guides, so you can focus entirely on the spectacular landscapes and culture.
